Photoshop VS Illustrator

CR License Plate
Initially, I figured I would label the post Photoshoping in Illustrator....
But then I realized.... hey the idea here is to simulate an effect. It really does not matter which program you use. I personally have a preference (soft side) Winking for Illustrator, but I like Photoshop as well for certain projects.
So why all the talk about both programs. Well, it started with the arrival of a recent podcast from pixel perfect (Revision 3) by the one and only BERT MONROY . His podcast involved creating a license plate in photoshop; and while I was watching the podcast I was thinking to myself there must be a hack to creating soft edges and emboss in Illustrator since Illustrator does not have an emboss filter.
I planned on investigating this matter, but well as usual got lost in After Effects.
Fast Forward three days or so, then came MORDY GOLDING of Mogo Media who also saw the same podcast and was intrigued just as I was about creating the same effect in Illustrator. He certainly accomplished the task and very well indeed.
After realizing a couple of months ago how powerful the Appearance palette in Illustrator was, I have relied on it for so many things, especially at work.
But, I must say after reading his blog post I have gained a new affection for it.
